About The Artist

Deep-Lane-Camp-7-03Martha grew up in the high peaks region of the Adirondacks of New York State. “I started making art as soon as I was old enough to hold a crayon”, she states. After graduating from Skidmore College and Syracuse University, she began her career in art education. Since retiring in 1995 after 32 years as an art instructor, she works as a full-time artist. She has enjoyed taking workshops with many inspiring artists, always looking to learn something new. She also shares her knowledge when she teaches classes and workshops.

She says, “I paint because I love to, I want to and I have to. Painting keeps me happy and in touch with the world.” She works in transparent watercolor, pastel, and gouache, feeling that each medium has lessons to carry to the others. She enjoys working both in her studio and en plein air. Among her favorite subjects are the landscape around her and the flowers in her gardens. She also includes her horses, cats and dogs as well as the wild birds at her feeders, among her chosen subjects. She has recently changed direction in some of her work from expressive, impressionistic realism toward abstraction. “The change has revitalized and refreshed me”, she says. “It’s exhilarating and gives me a new reason to get up in the morning.”

She is represented by Fynmore Studio And Gallery of Boonville and New Hartford, NY; Adirondack Art of Barneveld, NY; and the Gallery 3040 of Old Forge. She exhibits regularly in group and solo shows and her work has won many awards.

Martha is a “Signature Member” of the Central New York Watercolor Society. In May 2010, she earned “Signature Member” status in the Transparent Watercolor Society of America (TWSA), a respected national level organization for artists who specialize in watercolor as a transparent medium. In August 2011, Martha earned “Signature Member” status in the Pastel Society of America (PSA), the oldest existing pastel society in America.

Martha maintains a studio at her home on 140 acres of woods and meadows in Remsen, NY and currently counts four adopted cats, three adopted Border Collies, along with two horses, one raised and one adopted, as part of her family.

  1. Hi from an old friend!
Always love to see your work on line and that like me we just keep on creating! Everyone asks me about retirement and I say “Artists never stop!”
Living in VA now( near a daughter) and have been working hard to build a new reputation here. Currently am having two shows , one at Univ of VA where I have sold 12 out of 34, including one to the University for their permanent collection. Another in Harrisonburg, 38 paintings there. Phew! Also one in AWS show at Salmagundi Club in NYC.

Oh Martha, I see now why you are such a successful, dedicated, award winning artist.
Your slide show has inspired me so much. It would be hard for me to even go to bed if I had as many inspirational scenes to paint. It has been such a pleasure to spend five days with you in Kenosha, Wi. I will share your work with our daughter MARTHA who recently has started to try her hand at watercolor. At 50 she has never shown much interest in painting but now is so happy to learn as much as she can.
I hope our paths cross again soon. Safe journey home…..
    Warm hugs to you……
